Tumble & Fall by Alexandra Bullen Coutts

August 31, 2013      1 Comment

  • Release Date: September 17th 2013
  • Genre: Contemporary
  • Publisher : FSG (Macmillan)
  • Pages : 384

Synopsis : The world is living in the shadow of oncoming disaster. An asteroid is set to strike the earth in just one week’s time; catastrophe is unavoidable. The question isn’t how to save the world—the question is, what to do with the time that’s left? Against this stark backdrop, three island teens wrestle with intertwining stories of love, friendship and family—all with the ultimate stakes at hand.

I think most of the criticism of this book comes from the misconception that this novel is a full on dystopian. When I started Tumble & Fall I got what I expected;  a contemporary with some pre-apocalyptic undertones. Even with that said,  this book doesn’t hit a lot of high notes for me.

Book Review : The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer

February 10, 2012      5 Comments

“I don’t have feelings.”

― Michelle Hodkin, The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer

I wasn’t around the blogging block when buzz for this book began (holy alliteration, Batman !), but I can see why people were so excited. The cover is just beautiful, the name is wonderful and the synopsis is haunting. Unfortunately, what started as a chilling read quickly, turned into a lukewarm novel that disappointed me on one level.

Book Review: Fallen by Lauren Kate

October 22, 2011      4 Comments

“What if the person you were meant to be with could never be yours?”

― Lauren Kate, Fallen

Synopsis: Mysterious and aloof, he captures Luce Price’s attention from the moment she sees him on her first day at the Sword & Cross boarding school in sultry Savannah, Georgia. He’s the one bright spot in a place where cell phones are forbidden, the other students are all screw-ups, and security cameras watch every move. Even though Daniel wants nothing to do with Luce–and goes out of his way to make that very clear–she can’t let it go (really ?). Drawn to him like a moth to a flame, she has to find out what Daniel is so desperate to keep secret . . . even if it kills her. (P.S This synopsis does not at all describe the book)

Like a lot of people on this week’s  TopTen Tuesday I picked up Fallen because of the cover. It’s dark, mysterious, and full of melancholy. It has a girl in a pretty dress, I mean it just screams dark paranormal romance.

Book Review : City of Ashes

October 10, 2011      2 Comments

“Everyone has choices to make; no one has the right to take those choices away from us. Not even out of love.”

–Cassandra Clare, City of Ashes

Synopsis :  Clary Fray just wishes that her life would go back to normal. But what’s normal when you’re a demon-slaying Shadowhunter, your mother is in a magically induced coma, and you can suddenly see Downworlders like werewolves, vampires, and faeries?. . .Clary’s only chance to help her mother is to track down rogue Shadowhunter Valentine. . . To complicate matters, someone in New York City is murdering Downworlder children.

Ahh, The Mortal Instruments  Series . . . we meet again. As I have already said, I am not the biggest fan of this series. The plot isn’t terrible, but some of the writing drives me up the wall. Still, I keep reading them because I hate stopping in the middle of things and I did get City of Glass signedso I might as well stick around.

Book Review : City of Bones by Cassandra Clare

September 20, 2011      3 Comments

“Sarcasm is the last refuge of the imaginatively bankrupt.”

                                           ― City of Bones

Synopsis : When fifteen-year-old Clary Fray heads out to the Pandemonium Club in New York City, she hardly expects to witness a murder — much less a murder committed by three teenagers covered with strange tattoos and brandishing bizarre weapons. Clary knows she should call the police, but it’s hard to explain a murder when the body disappears into thin air and the murderers are invisible to everyone but Clary.
Equally startled by her ability to see them, the murderers explain themselves as Shadowhunters: a secret tribe of warriors dedicated to ridding the earth of demons. Within twenty-four hours, Clary’s mother disappears and Clary herself is almost killed by a grotesque demon.

But why would demons be interested in ordinary mundanes like Clary and her mother? And how did Clary suddenly get the Sight? The Shadowhunters would like to know….

I first heard about City of Bones via the drama concerning author Cassandra Clare. I’ve heard everything from rave reviews of this book to people claiming it was downright laughable. I’ve also heard this series is pretty much like Twilight. When I found out the series was being picked up for a film, I finally decided to read it.

What did I think ?
