Book Review: Fallen by Lauren Kate

October 22, 2011      4 Comments

“What if the person you were meant to be with could never be yours?”

― Lauren Kate, Fallen

Synopsis: Mysterious and aloof, he captures Luce Price’s attention from the moment she sees him on her first day at the Sword & Cross boarding school in sultry Savannah, Georgia. He’s the one bright spot in a place where cell phones are forbidden, the other students are all screw-ups, and security cameras watch every move. Even though Daniel wants nothing to do with Luce–and goes out of his way to make that very clear–she can’t let it go (really ?). Drawn to him like a moth to a flame, she has to find out what Daniel is so desperate to keep secret . . . even if it kills her. (P.S This synopsis does not at all describe the book)

Like a lot of people on this week’s  TopTen Tuesday I picked up Fallen because of the cover. It’s dark, mysterious, and full of melancholy. It has a girl in a pretty dress, I mean it just screams dark paranormal romance.

Book Review : Unwind by Neal Shusterman

October 18, 2011      3 Comments

“You can’t change laws without first changing human nature.”

-Nurse Greta

“You can’t change human nature without first changing the law.”

-Nurse Yvonne”

― Neal Shusterman, Unwind

For me, Unwind is the perfect book to fit into the dystopian triangle of  Suzanne Collin’s Hunger Games and Scott Westerfeld’s Uglies series. The novel is about a horrific norm that develops in a society where teenagers can be unwound and a group that decides to fight against it.

Book Review : Beautiful Darkness by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl

October 15, 2011      1 Comment

“She was my destination. I was always on my way to Lena, even when I wasn’t. Even when she wasn’t on her way to me.” – Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl, Beautiful Darkness

Synopsis : Together Ethan and Lena can face anything Gatlin throws at them, but after suffering a tragic loss, Lena starts to pull away, keeping secrets that test their relationship. And now that Ethan’s eyes have been opened to the darker side of Gatlin, there’s no going back. Haunted by strange visions only he can see, Ethan is pulled deeper into his town’s tangled history and finds himself caught up in the dangerous network of underground passageways endlessly crisscrossing the South, where nothing is as it seems.

In the sequel to Beautiful Creatures, Lena and Ethan find themselves dealing with the sad aftermath of the first novel.  Slowly, they began to deal with the fissures and distance in their relationship, while darkness begins to close in on them. Along the way, we get introduced to a few new villains and meet a new cast (lol) of characters.

Book Review : City of Ashes

October 10, 2011      2 Comments

“Everyone has choices to make; no one has the right to take those choices away from us. Not even out of love.”

–Cassandra Clare, City of Ashes

Synopsis :  Clary Fray just wishes that her life would go back to normal. But what’s normal when you’re a demon-slaying Shadowhunter, your mother is in a magically induced coma, and you can suddenly see Downworlders like werewolves, vampires, and faeries?. . .Clary’s only chance to help her mother is to track down rogue Shadowhunter Valentine. . . To complicate matters, someone in New York City is murdering Downworlder children.

Ahh, The Mortal Instruments  Series . . . we meet again. As I have already said, I am not the biggest fan of this series. The plot isn’t terrible, but some of the writing drives me up the wall. Still, I keep reading them because I hate stopping in the middle of things and I did get City of Glass signedso I might as well stick around.

Book Review : Pretties by Scott Westerfeld

October 7, 2011      1 Comment

“You had to want your mind to change. Maybe some people had always been pretty-headed, even back before the operation had been invented. Maybe some people were happier that way.”

– Scott Westerfeld, Pretties

Synopsis : Tally has finally become pretty. Now her looks are beyond perfect, her clothes are awesome, her boyfriend is totally hot, and she’s completely popular. It’s everything she’s ever wanted. But beneath all the fun — the nonstop parties, the high-tech luxury, the total freedom — is a nagging sense that something’s wrong. Something important. . .Now she has to choose between fighting to forget what she knows and fighting for her life — because the authorities don’t intend to let anyone with this information survive.

The first book,Uglies taunted readers and Tally with the perfect bubbly world of New Pretty Town. Let’s face it we were all a little curious about what it was like to be a Pretty and Pretties does exactly that. Who doesn’t want to see what the champagne-swilling, party going, Jersey-shore like atmosphere is like first hand? Somehow at their bubbliest Westerfeld still made Tally and Shay almost likeable characters. This book explores the aftermath that ensues after the cure has been discovered.

Book Review : Beautiful Creatures

October 4, 2011      2 Comments

“History was a bitch sometimes. You couldn’t change where you were from. But still, you didn’t have to stay there.” – Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl, Beautiful Creatures

Synopsis : Ethan Wate is haunted by dreams of a girl he’s never met. When Lena Duchannes moves into his small southern town of Gatlin County, Ethan is inexplicably drawn to her. And he is determined to uncover the strange connection between them, even if it means uncovering the one secret that could change everything.

I’ve only read one paranormal romance, Twilight, and have a “hate-like but still kind of annoyed” relationship with. Since then I decided to ward off teen paranormal romance
